Protecting and advancing the interests of organic consumers

Advocating for an ethical industry, truth in advertising, and strong organic standards.

The organics industry has drifted from its roots

The organic industry is enjoying boom times as more people become aware of the costs of conventional farming. But as the market has expanded, organic certification and industry associations have grown increasingly profit-driven and professionalised.

Certification began as a grassroots movement built largely on honour. As it commercialised, commercial pressures on the system have mounted — behind the scenes, and largely out of public view.

OCAA is a non-profit, grassroots association representing the interests of Australian organic consumers, seeking to put health and sustainability first.

The organics industry grew out of a grassroots movement based in idealism and inspiration. OCAA intends to recapture that spirit.

What we do

Standards

We campaign for strong organic standards — and for a single standard that works for both export and the domestic market. Australia currently has three, and none of them properly protect the consumer at the checkout.

Transparency

Certification decisions, derogations and exemptions are made largely out of public sight. We work to open up the process so consumers and growers can see what “certified organic” actually guarantees.

Truth in advertising

The word “organic” can legally appear on products sold in Australia without any third-party verification. We expose misleading claims and campaign for enforcement.

What “Certified Organic” should mean

Foods labelled “Certified Organic” have become the gold standard for health and sustainability. But as the organic market expands, large corporations — especially those acquiring organic brands — press to change the rules so more of their products qualify.

The result is an erosion of both organic standards and consumer trust in the organic label, for products such as eggs, milk, and even grain.

OCAA is committed to exposing fraudulent players in the organic industry while fighting for stronger — not weaker — organic standards.
